INCREASED CHALLENGES TO HEALTH

  • Health is under attack from multiple directions at the same time. Here are some of the sources and stressors working against health      
    1. Reduced nutrient dense food choices

Compared to the other three consumption groups, food, medicine, and illicit drugs, vitamins appear to be by far the safest group. When consumed at proper amounts and correct formats, vitamins complement dietary food nutrients and are safe from harming the body.  But, just like medicines and illicit drugs, vitamins can be abused or contaminated like food to become unhealthy.  This undercurrent principle is evident throughout many of the articles on this website. This author asked these same questions many years ago, (2006) and failing to find any constructive unbiased answers, began the development of this website. Behind this website are over 10,000 hours of searching through thousands of published medical journal articles to discover this material. There are some novel and insightful vitamin concepts presented here not yet found covered together in any other media. Current scientific vitamin research coupled with newly uncovered body physiology adding in some good old-fashioned common sense form the backbone for this new vitamin criteriaSee if you agree after reading the interpretations of linked research studies forming the base for each article.

Many of these facts can be positively influenced by intelligent vitamin choices, as well as also by a proper diet. UNDERSTANDING THESE FACTS SURROUNDING CONCEPTS WILL IMPROVE YOUR CHOICES BEFORE YOU TAKE ANY VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS.  These are just some of the vital vitamin aspects covered on this website with scientific study resources in support. Most Vitamins have a window or range of dosages between which health is maintained while BOTH lower and higher levels can induce distress, leading to disease. The Precautionary Principle is a conservative approach to supplement amounts that remain within this window for health, always on the lower side since food should supply the major amount of vitamins.

A Major Vitamin Research Dilemma

Vitamin research uses many tools to find nutritional vitamin facts. These tools include observations, dietary patterns, lab work in test tubes, studies on animals, and then with humans. Human vitamin studies are very difficult to conduct and interpret since factors like gender, genetics, gene code breaks, ethnicity, age, health conditions, dietary factors, exercise level, and intestinal bacteria load variations, all can influence results. These differences often result in a wide range of mixed results, some positive, some neutral, and some even negative. At best, maybe only generalities can be expected until many similar studies reach same conclusions. So far, very little is set in stone. This frustrates Scientists to no end. Cherry picking studies can "prove" almost any position.

This website simply attempts to find truths, as close to the actual reality as possible given current research results. Until clarification exists for many still controversial vitamin issues, the Precautionary Principle for taking vitamin supplements should remain in play. The new Vitamin Criteria incorporates this Principle. Rationalizing the Elephant in the Room 

This is an appropriate place to address the overpowering Elephant in the Room issue that most serious discussions about health and vitamins dance around. The Government Establishment Health Agencies control health protocols and make rules and dictate what can be said about health and even what treatments are acceptable for diseases. This also includes what vitamin companies can legally say about any influence of vitamin supplements on health. Here, the Health Agencies even deny scientific research if it does not support the mainstream narrative. Why?

FYI: Check out this Notice that is required on most vitamin product labels by order of the FDA: "These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease."  There is more to this notice that is not mentioned, "even if verified by science." The FDA will study a vitamin and discover it's functions, but will not allow any Vitamin Company to use that science and say that a vitamin helps in a given condition or disease. That part is left up to the Consumer. Isn't that what the FDA is all about, giving the Public information to keep them healthy?

 

Antithesis of (Nutritional) Science 

First, this is the antithesis of how science is suppose to operate. New views that challenge accepted doctrine or theories need to be debated and researched until they are either rejected and discarded or proven and become a new theory. But under the current health system, new views are more likely to be attacked and researchers discredited. Scientists studying opposite view research can be striped of future study grant funds and Doctors can be barred from hospital services or threatened with loss of practicing license. Almost any predetermined result can be orchestrated by manipulated procedures during study setup and analysis. The current vaccine mandates exhibit a prime current example of this abuse of scientific protocols. 

Since Government Health Agencies control the health narrative, questions arise as to why some beneficial vitamin studies are suppressed while others are heavily promoted. This website will simply attempt to reveal that some mainstream vitamin data is incomplete and it's promotion has likely been jeopardizing Public health for quite soon time. Transparency should be a two way street. Health should be an open discussion arena and not used as a pawn in a game. So far, freedom of speech, although struggling now to remain above water, remains one of the only avenues left to complete the vitamin supplement picture and protect Public health.

AUTHOR INSIGHTS:  Health and Vitamins, similar to life in general, don't always fit into nice and neat black and white facts and theories. An important concept to remember regarding this website is that when reading science research reports, everything is a matter of degrees. And that much of vitamin research results concern quite small degrees and only impact a limited number of people with either benefits or adverse effects. The majority of test subjects often appear unaffected. But then appearances don't tell the whole story. A 50% reduction in cancers doesn't mean 50% of the people in the test group, but simply the difference between the number of cancers in the test subjects versus the number in controls. This could be as few as 3 out of a 1000 or as large as 50 out of a 1000. Although any decrease or increase in disease rates is significant since we are talking about people's lives.  

*NOODILZATION Literally, this might refer to the activity of politicians doodling while others are speaking, having already formed a position but still need to look the attentive participant on TV. Or, using poetic license, a new meaning might refer to politicians lacking an ethical or moral backbone, that puts ideology over Public liberty and concerns.

SAFE SUPPLEMENTS

This primary question needs to be answered before any discussion about vitamin Supplements.

ARE VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS SAFE TO CONSUME? 

This demands a complex answer because it depends on many variables. As a basic description, when properly designed supplement amounts added together with dietary food vitamin amounts are more or less within balance points for healthy body metabolism, then supplemented vitamins are safe. Unfortunately, since most supplement vitamins are concentrated, this is more of a challenge than it ought to be.  Plus, the body has over time adapted many counter mechanisms to deal with unbalanced nutrient amounts. These often work quite well for a period of time, but then organs can be quickly overwhelmed and enter into a disease state.

These counter balancing mechanisms make it extremely difficult for Scientists to connect past deficiencies or excesses of vitamins to the present disease. Extra calcium without related protective nutrients can build up in artery walls and eventually lead to heart disease. In this case the protective nutrients are magnesium, vitamins D and K2, and 9-cis vitamin A. These act to bind calcium into bones and prevent calcification of arteries, plus they also help regulate blood sugar.

It can also be said that between these consumed groups; food, medicine, supplements, and illicit drugs, Vitamin Supplements are by far the safest group. There is still a lot of room for improved effectiveness and safety. Next is the reference showing results of a multi-year analysis of many studies. ref Mainly fat soluble vitamins plus vitamin C and folic acid are the ones they found suspect. Fat soluble vitamins can build up higher levels with continued consumption. Plus they get stored in fat cells.

Thus, multi-vitamin supplements can either be safe or not so safe depending on design formulas. Are the dosages within limits, are ideal formats for each vitamin used, and does it contain necessary synergistic nutrients to maximise vitamin performance?  Of course this also means that this product has to factor in individual body characteristics and unique dietary considerations. The Scientists at NIH Office of Dietary Supplements have to generalize and compromise when setting daily vitamin recommendation amounts to serve the majority of people.  Vitamin Manufacturers then use these recommendations to develop multi-vitamin formulas, but are always trying to find extras to gain a marketing advantage, like higher dosages. Thus by the time these compromised products reach the Public marketplace, is it realistic to assume they are a perfect match for your health needs, or just a compromised product in need of modifications to your individual health concerns. 

Appropriate multi-vitamin formulas are rare and difficult to find. Plus, science has yet to even research and answer all the questions for proper vitamin design. Correcting factors to improve this situation represents the guiding principals behind the research information and suggestions in website articles.

Vitamin Safety has come under fire lately in many larger studies. Nil and even negative findings are resulting in Scientists and Media calls for the Public to stop taking vitamins. The studies are failing to find benefits to the vitamin forms and dosages used in the studies for reducing heart disease, cancer, and dementia. There are actually some truths in these studies, but it is the take away that Scientists are failing to properly see and report that needs to be communicated to the bewildered Public. What would happen if different forms and dosages were used? Or what if needed synergistic nutrients that compliment study vitamins were added?

Here are some of the areas where excess vitamins and sometimes a deficiency too found in supplements may exhibit concerns:

  • Vitamins can enhance or hinder absorption of other nutrients  Excess calcium could block out other minerals like magnesium, zinc, and phosphorus. Vitamin E as alpha tocopherol can block out other vitamin E family members coming with food as well as vitamin K.
  • Vitamins can block out other nutrients from carrier binding proteins or docking attachments  Vitamin D has different forms. The non active and the active forms both combine with VDR, Vitamin D Receptors, and VDBP, vitamin D Binding Proteins. The two forms need to be in harmony.
  • Vitamins can hinder natural cascade of metabolic processes  Synthetic vitamin E has forms that do not exist in nature but can bind receptors without activating them. Just like the wrong key can go into a lock, but will not open it.
  • Beta Carotene and Lutein, Carotenoids (which can become vitamin A) team up to protect eyes  But, if an excess is ingested over time, the yellow orange color pigments they contain can lead to oxidative stress and damage in the macula as it becomes discolored, just like the skin and whites of the eyes can turn yellow orange from drinking too much carrot juice. The discoloration is a sign that the liver cannot process the colored carotinoids fast enough to eliminate and is storing them in the skin or whites of the eyes until processing can catch up. An observable sign to reduce intake. If discoloration is not the result of high carrot juice or carotenoid supplement intake, see a doctor as this could be sign of liver function.
  • Some B complex vitamins exhibit toxic activities in both excess and deficiency. B6 is connected to nerve damage. Folic Acid to both cancer prevention OR stimulation of growth at different stages of disease.
  • Fat soluble vitamins, vitamins A, D, E, K, Beta Carotene, etc, if taken every day at higher amounts can reach excess levels and overwhelm body processing. Lower dosages are preferred here or higher amounts need to be rotated with off and on days. This gives the body a chance to process and properly handle these amounts. This is not talking about toxic levels, but rather just slightly an excess. One area where this effect can be monitored is in the eyes. Certain carotenoids tend to accumulate in eye retinal tissues at the back of the eye and turn it slightly off color.

Enter in "G" popular search engine, VITAMINS. In just .70 of a second, out pops a number of websites found with this term, 2.9 Trillion. (About 20 years ago it ws only 17 million) Then scroll to the last page of offered websites. First there are just 20 pages with about 10 websites listed on each page. This search engine has eliminated some similar websites to the 199 ones listed. 199 out of 2.9 trillion is not very many, like a grain of sand in a full bucket. Most people rarely go past the first 4 pages. that would mean their vitamin fact decisions would be made from about 40 websites.

How does this search engine determine which vitamin websites get listed on the first pages? In the past, it was number of searches that had the most weight, but now it is mainly which websites get the most hits to advertisments on the website pages. Plus some impact from clever word usage for each topic, which mainly the big website IT professionals understand. Then, there are some companies that simple pay for top pages exposure.

FYI: Some years ago when this author was beginning research, the early days of the internet, search engines listed hundreds of pages of found websites. It was often at this deep depth that many of the small studies yielded novel concepts covered on this website. Some of which are unique to this website and rarely covered anywhere else.

EXAMPLE: The ratio influence of and impact between vitamin D produced and vitamin K2 carboxylated osteocalcin and uncarboxylated osteocalcin on prostate cancer growth. article*

*Copied for the last referenced article: "This is very new and still in preliminary stage of development. It presents how a nutrient may have both positive actions for one function and potentially negative from same function on another area. Vitamin D directs bone cells to produce Osteocalcin. Vitamin K carboxylates osteocalcin into the bone mineralization form. The Osteocalcin forms also participate in normal prostate cell growth. The two forms of osteocalcin, unOC for uncarboxylated osteocalcin, and cOC for vitamin K carboxylated osteocalcin, appear to have opposite and balancing effects on prostate cancer growthref (2016) The unOC form inhibits while the cOC form stimulates prostate cancer cell growth individually in a test tube study. The trick may be to get just the right amount of both vitamins D & K so a balance is maintained between unOC and cOC to build healthy bones, control prostate cell growth, and balance blood sugar, another function for osteocalcin."

For added clarification from another direction, here is copy from another article with information on how osteocalcin forms impact testosterone. "The bone connected hormone, Osteocalcin, produced by vitamin D acting on bone building cells, works to increase testosterone and is a factor in male infertility. Osteocalcin has two forms in the body. One as it is produced by bone building cells, called undercarboxylated osteocalcin (uOC), and the other as the vitamin K2 converted form called gamma-carboxylated osteocalcin (cOC). The uOC form acts on the pancreas-bone-testis axis by attaching to Leydig cells of the testis for testosterone biosynthesis. The uOC also works on pancreatic beta cells and muscle cells to control glucose insulin regulation. Of critical importance here is the newly discovered facts that, in test tube studyuOC stops prostate cancer cell growth while cOC speeds up cancer cell growth." 

There is obviously a great need for vitamin K2 in bone building, but just as important, too much vitamin K2 could upset the balance between cOC and uOC needed for not only blood sugar regulation and balance, but also for prostate cancer oontrol. USA Health Agency Indicted

Yes, this is a teaser title, but it could be real and may be in the future.

The FDA should be inducted for withholding positive vitamin results that could have reduced and maybe prevented many cases of Alzheimer's dementia in the Public. This is a very devestating condition.

For over 14 years, this positive scientific research information has been known and should have been shouted to the rooftops by the Food and Drug Agency that consuming all of the eight vitamin E family members reduces dementia. Below is the text of one study from 2010.

A dementia-free sample of 232 subjects aged 80+ years, derived from the Kungsholmen Project, was followed-up to 6 years to detect incident AD. Plasma levels of vitamin E (alpha-, beta-, gamma, and delta-tocopherol; alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocotrienol) were measured at baseline. Vitamin E forms-AD association was analyzed with Cox proportional hazard model after adjustment for several potential confounders. Subjects with plasma levels of total tocopherols, total tocotrienols, or total vitamin E in the highest tertile had a reduced risk of developing AD in comparison to persons in the lowest tertile. Multi-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were 0.55 (0.32-0.94) for total tocopherols, 0.46 (0.23-0.92) for total tocotrienols, and 0.55 (0.32-0.94) for total vitamin E. When considering each vitamin E form, the risk of developing AD was reduced only in association with high plasma levels of beta-tocopherol (HR: 0.62, 95% CI 0.39-0.99), whereas alpha-tocopherol, alpha- tocotrienol, and beta-tocotrienol showed only a marginally significant effect in the multiadjusted model [HR (95% CI): alpha-tocopherol: 0.72 (0.48-1.09); alpha-tocotrienol: 0.70 (0.44-1.11); beta-tocotrienol: 0.69 (0.45-1.06)]. In conclusion, high plasma levels of vitamin E are associated with a reduced risk of AD in advanced age. The neuroprotective effect of vitamin E seems to be related to the combination of different forms, rather than to alpha-tocopherol alone, whose efficacy in interventions against AD is currently debated.

FYI: NOW, this data has been available for over 15 years. WHY do you think the FDA has remained silent about this positive result????

Here are three issues that confound FDA decisions about vitamins and health.

  • First, FDA is slow to accept new research and some changes in the past took over 20 years to gain acceptance. Example: Negative health impact and label listing of Trans-Fats. 
  • Second, any changes to RDI such as increases in vitamin amounts would mean increases of millions of dollars since by law, the Federal meal programs must have every meal served contain a third of RDI vitamin amounts.
  • And last, any healthful vitamin changes could result in improved health of the Public. And this would result in decreased Big Pharma profits. Most of the Scientists at the FDA were previously employed in Big Pharma and many return after time at FDA. This possible conflict of interest might alter FDA decisions. EXAMPLE: Scientists that worked on drug development at a Medical Company often later become FDA Scienctist and are put on the approval team for that drug since they have working knowledge already. One rather large impact to Big Pharma profits came with the FDA decision to partner with Big Pharma by increasing FDA Lab R&D for new drug evaluations and faster clinical testing evaluations. Plus the Government offered other benefits such as tax incentives and Fast Track drug acceptance time reductions. Unfortunately, some of  the Covid-19 vaccines came in under a FastTrack program leading to acceptance of benefit over now known risks, such as myocarditis and thrombosis, both microvessel blood clot conditions.
